Rest Mode Activated — Week 2
When You Feel Burned Out
Burnout is more than being tired. It is what happens when life keeps demanding output, but your body and soul are running low.
This message continues our Rest Mode Activated series and looks at Elijah’s story in 1 Kings 19.

Series Connection
Rest Was Built Into Creation
In week one, we saw that rest was built into creation before sin broke creation. Rest is not weakness. Rest is part of God’s design.
But what happens when we ignore that design? What happens when we keep burning the candle at both ends until we are burned out?
That is where Elijah’s story helps us. In 1 Kings 19, Elijah is not spiritually lazy or careless. He is a faithful prophet who has carried too much for too long.
Message Summary
Elijah’s Burnout Story Is Found in 1 Kings 19
Elijah had just experienced one of the greatest victories of his ministry. Fire fell from heaven. The power of God was on display. But right after that victory, Elijah ran, isolated himself, collapsed under a broom bush, and prayed, “I have had enough.”
Sometimes burnout does not come after failure. Sometimes it comes after carrying too much for too long.
“Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.”
1 Kings 19:7 NIV
How God Restores
God Meets Burned-Out People With Grace
God cares for Elijah’s body with sleep, food, and water. God meets Elijah’s soul with a gentle whisper. God reconnects Elijah to purpose and people.
This is good news for anyone who feels like the journey is too much. God cares about the real needs of your life. Your body matters. Your soul matters. Your connection with God’s people matters.

Three Ways God Restores the Burned Out
1. God cares for the body.
Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is receive care: sleep, food, water, help, and rest.
2. God meets the soul with His whisper.
When the noise of life is loud, the whisper of God can reach places nothing else can.
3. God reconnects us to people.
Burnout pushes us into isolation, but God restores us through His presence and through His people.
The Invitation
Receive from Jesus
When life is too much, we do not just try harder. We receive from Jesus.
Jesus carried what we could not carry. He carried our sin, sorrow, shame, and suffering. He died and rose again so we could receive grace, forgiveness, direction, and His Spirit.
Bring your burnout to Jesus. Receive care. Hear His voice. Connect with God’s people.
