Who is this 2 – Miracle Worker

Pastor Chris FluittSermons

Jesus Miracle Worker

Do you recognize Jesus when you see Him? A lot of people in the Bible didn’t.
When Jesus calmed the storm by saying “Peace be still”, his disciples, who knew Him so well were left with the question, “Who is this?” They were exposed to a power so great that it caused them to re-evaluate Jesus.
Jesus is all powerful. He did miracles, things no other human could ever do. If you need a miracle you should look to Jesus. He still does miracles today.

    • Jesus is Scary! (He has Scary Power)
    • Jesus does Miracles
    • God uses miracles to promote Truth
    • God still does miracles

Sermon Notes by Chris Fluitt

**Bumper Video –
“You know the name, but do you know the man?
You know his story, but have you really captured his heart…? His purpose?
Is He clearly seen by you?
You know.. but look again… stare for a while and ask… “Who is this?””
Welcome to Redemption Church! We are glad to have fellowship with you today.  My name is Chris Fluitt, I’m the lead pastor.  I’m excited, because we are talking About Jesus! We are in the 2nd week of our “WHO IS THIS” series.
Who is this?
Last week as we celebrated Easter we told you that Jesus is the Resurrection. The Resurrection isn’t what Jesus does… Rising from the dead is not a thing He does… The Resurrection is WHO HE IS!
John 11:25 Jesus said..”I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;(NIV)
We don’t always understand Jesus…  Although Jesus is famous…

Jesus = Famous

Although His name and story is highly recognizable…  Jesus is often unrecognized, misunderstood, and misrepresented.
Jesus is famously mistaken
Many times in your Bible, people who knew Jesus, would look at Jesus and not recognize Him.
Last week we told you about Mary Magdalene, the first person to see Jesus Resurrected from the grave. When she saw Jesus she mistook Him for a gardener or cemetery groundskeeper.
We often make the same mistake. We often meet Jesus face to face and don’t recognize Him.
Luke 8:22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out.(NIV)
Luke 8:23 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.(NIV)
Luke 8:24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm.(NIV)
Luke 8:25 “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”(NIV)
What an interesting story! So many interesting parts to this story.
Jesus is a heavy sleeper. He sleeps through storms so ferocious that it caused experienced sailors to panic. These guys thought they were going down. They said “Master we are going to drown.”
He rebukes storms, and the storms back down.  (Luke 8:24)
With 3 words from Jesus – PEACE BE STILL – The storm, the waves, the wind… ALL GONE! (Mark 4:39)
Has Jesus ever calmed your storm?  Tell us about it
The disciples look at each other and ask “Who is this? Even the wind and wave obey Him.” (Mark 4:41)
Now they knew Jesus.  They knew where He was from. They knew His family and had been to His house.  They had eaten with Him, talked with Him, traveled with Him.  They knew he was a carpenter.  These guys where well acquainted with Jesus…  But yet here they ask “Who is this?”
Mark 4:41 says they were terrified… no longer afraid of the storm… but they were terrified of Jesus.

Jesus is Scary

This Jesus did something so unexpected, so out of the norm, inexplicable, impossible, implausible that it scared them.
There is so much power in Jesus that it could scare you.  There is so much power in the name of Jesus that it causes demons to tremble.
Thankfully Jesus loves us and never uses His power (Matt 28:18 says He has ALL POWER) to harm us.  But let me remind you that Jesus has scary amounts of power.  These men, that knew Jesus in ways we can only dream about, where frightened when they saw His power on display.
They had to ask – “Who is this?” They had to Re-evaluate Jesus

We have storms in life that cause us to act like the disciples.  “Oh God we are going down… save us!”
What if we used the storms of life to help us re-evaluate Jesus? What if instead of praying “God help me avoid this storm” we prayed “Use this storm to show me who you are… help me re-evaluate your strength, your power, your love, your patience, your holiness, your grace…”
There is a “Who is this?” moment in your storm. Look for it!

We serve a Jesus who works miracles!

  36. Heals the ear of Malchus (Luke 22:49-51)
  37. The second catch of fish (John 21:6)

This isn’t an exhaustive list. Because Jesus did many other miracles not recorded in scripture.
John 21:25 Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.(NIV)
Why Miracles?
John 20:30 Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.(NIV)
John 20:31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.(NIV)
Why Miracles? “That you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God… That you may have life in His name.” John 20:31
Mark 2:10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins….” He said to the paralytic,(NIV)
Mark 2:11 “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.”(NIV)
Mark 2:12 He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”(NIV)
“That you may know…”  The purpose of miraculous healing is so that you will know… so that you will learn.
Learn what?  Know what? “That you may know the Son of man has authority to forgive sins.”
God is not short sighted. He doesn’t just want to save your physical body from sickness. He wants to fully redeem all of who you are. Not just a physical deliverance but to save your soul… to forgive your sins.

Do you know someone that needs to “know” that Jesus can forgive sins?  They need to see a miracle. Jesus looks to do miracles so that they will know.  Pray and believe for a miracle.
If you have been witness to a miracle… you should “know” better.  If you have been witness to a miracle but haven’t made a step closer to Jesus… You should “know” better.  If you have seen a miracle but still haven’t come to faith and trust in Jesus… You should “know” better.
Redemption Church! We should know better!  We have seen cancer healed. Epilepsy vanish. People brought back from the dead.  We should “know” better.  We should KNOW a deeper faith. We should KNOW a more extravagant worship. We should KNOW that if God be for us who can be against us. We should KNOW that we are more than conquerors through Him that loves us. We should KNOW!      Do you know?
Why Miracles?
God uses miracles, signs, wonders, & gifts of the Spirit to testify to the message of salvation
Hebrews 2:2-4 God also testified to it (the message of salvation) by signs, wonders and various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.
I’m talking to a Church that wants to be a 1st Century Church connecting to a 21st century world…  Well the 1st century church expected miracles after they preached the saving message of Jesus.  They expected God to Confirm the message… to testify that it is the true message…
God uses miracles, signs, wonders, & gifts of the Spirit to testify to the message of salvation.
Acts 14:3 So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to do miraculous signs and wonders.(NIV)
You listen to me Redemption Church! I want you to wake yourself up and listen to me. Pay close attention to what I am about to say.
We do 3 things when we gather together. #1 We worship together. #2 We receive the Word of God together. #3 We come talk to God.
We come gather in this altar and we talk to God.  Don’t you ever be ho hum about this.  Don’t you ever treat it as a going through the motions exercise.
Because miracles happen after the Word is preached. When the message of Jesus is preached God is looking for someone to confirm His word to… God wants to testify His salvation to you through a miracle.
That’s why we push the 3rd thing so much. That’s why we challenge you to get up from your chair and take a step.  That’s why we ask you to come receive prayer in the first 2 feet of this altar.  We are believing God for a miracle.
Now let me be stern with you. There have been times where you came to church needing a miracle but you didn’t worship like you needed one.  You didn’t give your heart to the Word of God like you needed a miracle.  And you didn’t come talk to God like you needed a miracle.
That needs to change. Because we serve a Jesus who does miracles.
We don’t come pray in this altar because the preacher did a good job. We don’t come pray because it is a religious rule. We come pray because we have received the Word of God and are inviting God to come confirm His word in us.
Especially after the Word is preached you should come pray… you should come get your miracle.

Need a Miracle?
We are going to be opening this altar for a time of talking to God.  If you want a miracle I want to pray with you in the first 2 feet of this altar.
If you need a Miracle you are in the right place. We believe God still works miracles. We believe God is just as active and powerful as He has ever been.
Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.(NIV)
The Life of Jesus was marked with miracles.  Jesus, the Miracle Worker is still alive!
He has not changed. He is the same yesterday today and forever.
The life of a Jesus follower should be marked with miracles.
The church of Jesus should be marked with miracles.

The same Jesus that healed a blind man… He is here right now…
The same Jesus that pulled money out of a fish… He is here right now…
The same Jesus that raised up a paralyzed man and forgave His sins… He is here right now…
