Creature Feature Week 1 – The Blob of Sin

Pastor Chris FluittSermons

Do you believe in monsters?  Did you know your Bible believes in monsters? Several mysterious monsters are mentioned in scripture… The behemoth, leviathan, The 4 horsemen, the beasts, the dragon of revelation, and angry giants…  So maybe we should rethink monsters?
Every scary monster movie has a scene where a character doesn’t realize they are close to the monster. Perhaps they are hiding when deadly glowing eyes of the alien appear behind them. Or perhaps they are running from the psycho killer when they run into their friend and are relieved to not be alone… but little do they know their friend is the Psycho Killer!!!
Could it be that there is a monster in the room? Could it be that we are in danger?redemption church october chris fluitt sin
Pastor Chris tells us about the intergalactic monster, the blob, who although started so small and seemed so harmless carried the creature feature of uncontrollable growth and appetite.
This reminds us of another monster in the Bible. A little seemingly harmless act of obedience called sin.. whose uncontrollable growth and appetite devoured the world.

The Bible does believe in monsters. Several mysterious monsters are mentioned in scripture… The behemoth, leviathan, The 4 horsemen, the beasts, the dragon of revelation, and angry giants…     They Bible believes in monsters ya’ll..

There is an idea that takes place in every scary movie. It happens like this. A character isn’t aware that the monster is near them. Perhaps they found a hiding place but they don’t realize that the Alien is right behind them.  They run into their friend and think now they are safe, but they don’t realize until it is too late that their friend is actually the killer psychopath.
You need to be aware of the Monster in the room
You must be able to detect the monster. You must be able to recognize the monster. It could be that the monster is already in the room. This series is about identifying and recognizing the creature features…
Today I want to talk to you about an intergalactic monster…
The Blob
The Blob, an alien life form, came to earth inside a meteorite. This foreign entity seemed harmless enough when a farmer found it. It was just a small gelatinous goo that he pocked with a stick.
But what seemed so small, harmless, and insignificant was anything but. BLOB CLIP
Once the blob attached itself to the farmer’s hand it was impossible to remove. The local doctor discovered that nothing could stop this blob… not acid, not bullets… After it completely ate the farmer, the now larger blob turned on the doctor and his staff.
The blob growing larger and larger after every screaming teenager meal grew to the size that it would now take over the city.
What can we learn from this Creature Feature? Uncontrollable growth and appetite
I can’t help but think that this science fiction horror story is drawn from another source.  The story of sin..
Sin
The Bible tells us about a garden called Eden. Man & Woman had a perfect communion with each other and with God. But in the middle of the garden was a tree whose fruit they were not allowed to eat… it was the one thing they shouldn’t do… but can we get real here. We are talking about eating fruit.
You talk about a small sin.  They ate fruit…   As kids we all snuck cookies from the cookie jar… That is essentially the same thing…
But what starts off small can feature Uncontrollable growth and appetite
Like the farmer poking the blob… the small act of eating the fruit from the tree of knowledge… sin attached itself to humanity. But it didn’t just attach. It grew!
In Genesis 3 Adam & Eve eat the fruit. In Genesis 4 their son Cain, kills his brother Abel. Later in the chapter Lamech, Cain’s descendant, declares that he will live however he wants to live, take any woman he wants to have, and kill anyone who gets in his way. He kills multiple people and takes multiple wives and boasts about it. And then in Genesis 5 we have Noah…  From Adam to Noah are the lifespans of 2 people… (Adam, Methuselah, Noah)  Here is how God describes the world that Noah lived in..
Genesis 6:5 The LORD saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.(NIV)
Genesis 6:6 The LORD was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain.(NIV)
Genesis 6:7 So the LORD said, “I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth–men and animals, and creatures that move along the ground, and birds of the air–for I am grieved that I have made them.”(NIV)
In the lifespan of 2 men the world had gone from the garden to a world where everyone thought about evil all the time…
Sin
Do you think the farmer, if he had only known what that small blob was capable of… If he had known.. would he have ever come close to it?
Do you think Adam & Eve, if they had only known what a small disobedience was capable of… if they had ever known what it would set loose of the earth… if they could have seen how fast and uncontrollable it would grow… if they could see the insatiable appetite of sin…
If they could see racism, hatred, genocide..    wars, mass graves, nuclear bombs, and torture…  slavery, the sex trade, child abuse, pedophilia… women being kidnapped and chained in basements and treated not as people but objects…  if they could see mass killings that take place at restaurants, colleges, and elementary schools… if they could see people with no hope, suicide, popping pills and living in depression, addicts strung out on drugs breaking into homes or selling themselves sexually to get their next fix…  if they could see the disease of cancer, aids, ebola, alzheimers…
This world is full of so much evil and it all started with something so small and seemingly harmless, but it has grown into this unstoppable creature that has devoured the entire human race.

I know it is awkward and uncomfortable to talk about sin. I know it doesn’t make you feel good to talk about it.  But ignoring it won’t make the problem go away. There is a monster in the room! Someone needs to stand up and talk about sin.

All of the world’s problems are traced back to sin.
The problem with racism isn’t the color of our skin – It is a sin problem.
The problem with war isn’t political differences – It is a sin problem.
The problem with poverty and greed isn’t our economic system of communism or capitalism – It is a sin problem.
Once that little blob of sin was set free in the garden it grew very fast and it destroys everyone.

Sin grows fast and it spreads…  Have you ever told a lie only to find out that you needed to tell another lie… and another and another..  One lie and now you are living a lie. That escalated quickly!
Someone starts with a onetime drug use at a party, but it turns into an addiction.  But the drug they were addicted to doesn’t give them the same high it use to so they move onto harder drugs… More drugs and stronger drugs..
Sin Grows uncontrollably.  Sin has an uncontrollable appetite.
Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned–(NIV)
So what we do? What is the answer?

In the 1988 remake of the blob the government gets involved and all these scientists and soldiers show up in hazmat suits seeking to Quarantine the situation.
They tried to isolate all the people and the alien blob.  But the blob didn’t cooperate. The blob ate right through their suits. There was no scientific solution and neither was there a military one.  The blob would eat their bullets and grenades. That quarantine failed.
The quarantines in the Old Testament failed as well.
The flood was a quarantine. God said the world is so evil that I have to do something. He found the one favorable person left, Noah. He told Noah to build an ark while he washed the earth clean.
This was only a temporary relief… because the people on the ark carried a passenger named sin.  The quarantine failed and mankind went back to evil deeds.
So maybe people needed laws to follow. Maybe they needed rules that said “Thou shalt not kill.. Thou shalt not steal.. commit adultery..” What is this? It is another quarantine.
The 10 commandments tried to keep people away from the monster.  There was no keeping us away from what already infected us.
We are all infected.  Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,(NIV)
Romans 7:17 …sin is living in me.
The Creature is alive in us.  I told you there was monster in the room. Sin, the source of every bad thing is living inside of us.
Is there a way to separate ourselves from this creature inside us?
MUSICIAN
SPOILER ALERT!  In the 1958 movie they defeated the blob by freezing it with CO2 from fire extinguishers and sealing it away in a container and dropping it in the North Pole.
Is there a container for our sin?

You are familiar with Jesus being the light of the world, the Lamb of God, Prince of Peace… You know a lot of His titles, but I’m going to give you a new one today.
Jesus is our sin container
Isaiah 53:4 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted.(NIV)
Isaiah 53:5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.(NIV)
Isaiah 53:6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.(NIV)

Jesus took within himself the sin of the world.  Your sin and my sin he contains within himself.

Jesus praying in the garden of Gethsemane was offered a cup from His father. It was a cup He did not want to drink.  Inside this cup was all the sin of humanity past present and future.  The gigantic blob of evil… and Jesus upon looking at all this evil and sin drank of the cup.  He contained all of the sin of humanity.
2 Corinthians 5:21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.(NIV)

No other man could contain sin. Sin would corrupt, crush, & condemn every man that it came in contact with… until it came in contact with Jesus Christ.
He knew no sin yet became sin… for us..   That we… who are sinners… we who are infected with the creature feature of sin… might become His righteousness.

We are about to open these altars…

Here is how you defeat the Blob…
Isaiah 53:4 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted.(NIV)
Jesus took your infirmities and sickness. You aren’t meant to carry this. Put it in the container.
Your sorrows. Jesus bore them on the cross.
Your affliction… all your losses and anguish… He was afflicted.  Put it in the container.
Isaiah 53:5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.(NIV)
Transgressions… Jesus paid the cost of your transgressions.
He was crushed for your iniquities.
Your punishment… he chose to take your punishment..
He took your wounds… emotional, physical, mental scars… don’t hold on to them… put them in the container…

What is it that you need to put in the container today?
